AGES
Because of the nature of online learning, we recommend our virtual classes for ages 10 and up.
Teens and adults are most welcome to join in too!
If your child is under age 10 but still very keen to participate, it’s possible to attend but we recommend an adult or older sibling be available to assist if needed.
SKILL LEVEL
Two of our projects involve hand sewing! To ensure success in our projects we recommend our students already be familiar with hand sewing and be confident in threading needles, making starting and ending knots and fixing tangled threads.
Please take a look at our project plans before deciding if our classes are a good fit.
MATERIAL KITS
We’ve done the hard work of prepping the tools and materials you’ll need to complete these projects, but you’ll still need to provide some basic household items like scissors, tape, box cutter knife and hot glue. We’ve added notes in the project descriptions below and will remind you again of these items after registering.
Residents of Kitchener- Waterloo:
Kits will be delivered to your address on April 10th
Out-of-towners:
Kits can be picked up anytime at our Kitchener location, 103 Bridge St. East, or delivered for an additional mailing fee (please inquire!)
our project line up
Going along with our Skills for Sustainability theme, we’ve come up with a handful of projects that utilize one of the most abundant materials we’ve been collecting over our years of making….fabric scraps! With every sewing project we do, it’s inevitable that we end up with small pieces of fabric that are just too beautiful to add to the landfill. So we’ve decided to teach different ways in which these scraps can be used to create useful and decorative projects.
Monday
Paper + Fabric Beads
Even the smallest scraps of fabric can be used to create one-of-a-kind beads. These can be used for jewellery making, zipper pulls, key chains, incorporate them into your macrame and the list goes on.
We’ll be using cardstock paper strips to create the bead core, which can then be wrapped in fabric or other patterned paper. Beads will be sealed with a gloss varnish to protect them.
Students to provide the following household items:
scissors
scrap paper
tape
small paintbrush
damp cloth (for cleaning sticky fingers)
TUESDAY
Cardboard Desktop Organizer
Having your tools neatly organized and available at arms reach makes making things so much more enjoyable. Don’t waste time searching for your art supplies, create your own first-order-retrieval system to fit your stuff! Your finished tool caddy can be covered in fabric scraps or decorative paper to take it to the next level.
PLEASE NOTE: This project involves cutting and scoring cardboard which will require the use of sharp tools.
Students to provide the following household items:
single layer cardboard (mailing boxes work well)
cutting mat or more cardboard to protect work surface
ruler
scissors
box cutter knife or Canary Cardboard Saw*
masking tape or brown paper tape*
*Optional Add-On Purchases:
Canary Cardboard Saw (serrated safety saw for worry-free cutting)
Brown Paper Tape (strong, super sticky and can be painted on)
These are our two most beloved items for use in cardboard building and were included in our Summer 2020 Essentials Kit. If you don’t have these and would like to add them to your order, please do so when checking out. These do not come included in our April Break Kit.
WEDNESDAY
Scrappy Sewing Kit
This project makes a portable little pouch to keep your sewing supplies organized and ready to use when you are. We’ll be up-cycling a pair of old denim jeans and utilizing more fabric scraps to make this project.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a hand sewing project and requires students to already be familiar with this skill.
Students to provide the following household items:
sharp scissors for cutting fabric
Pin Cushion Ring
This is a bonus project if time allows (a video tutorial will be available for later viewing).
We can’t resist making this adorable pin cushion ring. Not only is it fashionable but functional too! Keep your needles off the floor and close at hand.
THURSDAY
Appliqué Hoop Art
Create an artful arrangement of cut fabric scraps to proudly display your stitching skills. Students can follow pre-made patterns or invent their own imagery. The finished piece can be displayed in the hoop, or be used in other sewing projects, like a tote bag or a pillow. Please note, the finished pieces should not be washed as the cut fabric will fray.
Students will learn about stitching with normal thread and embroidery thread for this project.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a hand sewing project and requires students to already be familiar with this skill.
Students to provide the following household items:
sharp scissors for cutting fabric
scrap paper for sketching ideas
FRIDAY
Nesting Bird Material
To end off our week we wanted to keep it simple with a couple of classic Earth Day crafts.
First up we’ll create a hanging wire coil and fill it up with materials for nesting birds. This includes, yes you guessed it, fabric scraps! We’ll be cutting them down to a safe size for birds and adding other materials like cotton balls, yarn and thread bits. Bonus points if you have a furry friend at home who can offer up some fluff after a good brushing.
Earth Buddy
For our final craft, we’ll create an Earth Buddy who will provide you with a fresh patch of greenery to your windowsill. We’ll be germinating annual ryegrass which will start to grow in just a few days. Don’t forget to water and trim regularly!
Students to provide the following household items:
hot glue gun
