Week 27
Anything is a paintbrush
Welcome to week twenty-seven of your Smash Book! Today, you will be making your own paint brushes to experiment with different textures and patterns.
Step 1. The first thing you can do is forage outdoors for some materials to make your paint brushes from. Make sure to find many small sticks - these will be the base of your brush. Then, find some other plant life or recycled materials with interesting textures that you’d like to use for the bristle end.
Step 2. To assemble your brushes, first cut all of your sticks to a similar length. Then, using small pieces of the materials you gathered, attach them to each stick using tape.
Step 3. Print or prepare a Paintbrush Practice sheet (linked above). To begin your mark making experiments, dip each brush into India ink or paint, and practice a few strokes in each square of the sheet, or use a blank sheet and make your marks as large as you’d like. It’s a good idea to label each section so you remember which brush was used! Once the sheet is dry, paste it into your Smash Book using a glue stick.
Step 4. Now is time to get creative with your brushes! Gather some small pieces of paper, and experiment with different textures to create some cool abstract designs.
Step 5. Once you have many different paintings, pick your favourites and arrange them creatively in your Smash Book!
