Week 3

Simply Me

Welcome to week three of your Smash Book! Today, you will be creating a self portrait from coloured paper. This portrait will be an abstract representation of you, made up of simple shapes!

Follow the steps below to get started making your own self portrait!

Step 1. Find and print out a photo of yourself that you really like! If you don’t have a printer, use a mirror and make a sketch of your face.

Step 2. Using a marker, look at the picture and try to trace around any simple shapes you can see. For example, you might see triangles in your hair, circles in your eyes, or a square in your nose!

Step 3. Next, get some coloured paper. Looking at the shapes you found in your photo, cut out the same shapes. Don't be afraid to get creative and use some wild colour combos!

Step 4. Open to a new page in your Smash Book. Using a glue stick, paste in the colourful shapes you just cut out to match your photo. You now have a cool abstract self portrait! If you want, you can also glue in the photo of yourself on the next page so you can compare them both.

If you don’t have any coloured paper, try making your own! Watercolour paint, markers, crayons, and India ink can be used to transform plain white paper into colourful Art Papers for all your Smashing Book needs.
